New Smyrna Beach lies on Florida's Atlantic coast in Volusia County, south of Daytona Beach. The map is organised by water. The mainland town, with its older historic streets, faces the Indian River lagoon and the Intracoastal Waterway. Across the lagoon, causeways and bridges lead to a long, narrow barrier island, where one straight road runs parallel to the beach.
The town has one of the longer histories in Florida. In 1768 the British colonist Andrew Turnbull founded a settlement here and brought in settlers from Minorca, Greece and Italy to work plantations. The colony failed within a decade, and most survivors moved north to St. Augustine. Its story is still part of local identity.

Between them, small islands, mangroves and channels fill the lagoon with detailed, irregular shapes.
