Newport occupies the southern end of Aquidneck Island, where Narragansett Bay meets the Atlantic. The map splits into distinct parts. Near the harbour, narrow colonial streets and wharves crowd the waterfront. Inland, Bellevue Avenue runs south between large estates. Along the rocky southern shore, Ocean Drive traces a winding line past coves and headlands.
The city was an important colonial port and later became the summer home of America's wealthiest families, who built the famous Gilded Age mansions. Touro Synagogue, dedicated in 1763, is the oldest surviving synagogue building in the United States. Newport is also closely linked to sailing and hosted the America's Cup for decades.
