Oshnavīyeh lies in West Azerbaijan Province in north-western Iran, close to the border with Iraq. From above, the town sits in a valley among the mountains of the northern Zagros, with steep slopes rising on several sides and the built-up area stretching along the flatter ground between them.
The street pattern is dense in the centre and becomes looser toward the edges, where orchards and fields take over. Roads follow the valley toward the plains to the east, which drain toward Lake Urmia, while tracks lead up into the mountains, giving the map a clear sense of direction.
