It lies on the Deccan plateau, where broad, gently undulating land is given over to farming, much of it on dark soils suited to cotton and other crops. On the map the town is a dense cluster of lanes and small blocks, surrounded by a wide field of agricultural land.
The older part of the town has an irregular street pattern, with narrow lanes and markets that grew over time rather than to a plan. Around it, newer residential areas follow straighter roads.
