Valley-following streets
Streets follow the lower ground between hills, so the town takes a long, curved outline. On the map the terrain is visible through the roads alone.

Pingshan Map Poster & Print
This Pingshan is in Chongqing, in the hilly country on the eastern side of the Sichuan Basin. Here, the land shapes almost every street. From above, the town follows valley floors and gentle slopes, and roads curve around hills instead of crossing them. The built-up area takes the shape of the ground it sits on.
Around the town, the landscape is typical of rural Chongqing: rounded hills, terraced fields cut into the slopes, and small villages scattered along the valleys. Water collects in ponds and small reservoirs. These show on a map as smooth solid shapes among the curving field boundaries and roads.
A Pingshan map poster shows how people have fitted a town into difficult terrain. There are few straight lines on it. Streets and roads bend and branch, creating a flowing, organic pattern that looks very different from a flat-land grid. It suits anyone from this part of Chongqing.

Terraced surroundings
Farmland on the nearby slopes is often terraced. Field edges run in contour-like curves around the hills and fill the space around the town.
Ponds and reservoirs
Small bodies of water are scattered through the landscape. On the poster they break up the network of curving lines as smooth, solid shapes.
