Scarborough sits on the North Yorkshire coast, and its shape from above is one of the clearest of any English seaside town. A rocky headland, crowned by the ruins of Scarborough Castle, divides the coast into two bays. North Bay is quieter and more residential. South Bay holds the harbour, the old town and the main seafront.
Scarborough is often described as Britain's first seaside resort. Visitors came to drink the spa waters in the 17th century and later to bathe. The Spa buildings, the cliff gardens and the Victorian terraces above South Bay all come from that long history.
