Schiltigheim borders Strasbourg to the north, and on a map the boundary is almost invisible: streets run straight from one into the other. From above, the town is a dense fabric of blocks, older courtyards and newer housing, framed by rail lines and major roads. Larger industrial parcels are scattered among the residential streets.
The town is known as the cité des brasseurs, the city of brewers. For generations it was one of the main brewing centres in Alsace, home to names such as Fischer and Adelshoffen. Large brewery sites still mark the town's map even where production has moved or stopped. Traditional Alsatian houses remain in the older streets.
