A river curves through the valley and splits the city into its two banks. It is the strongest element on the poster and sets its orientation.

Mapa
Shaowu Map Poster & Print
Shaowu lies in the northwest of Fujian province, in hilly, forested country toward the Wuyi mountain range. On a map the city follows the course of a river through a narrow valley. Urban blocks fill the flatter ground along the water, and the hills rise sharply behind them on both sides.
That constraint shapes the whole layout. The main streets run roughly parallel to the river, bridges tie the two banks together, and newer districts spread wherever the valley widens. Beyond the edges, terraced slopes and forest take over, and the linework thins into contours and a few winding mountain roads.
A Shaowu map poster is about the meeting of city and terrain. The long, curved river in the middle holds the design together. The streets alongside show how a mid-sized city in southern China makes use of every bit of level ground between the mountains.

Valley-shaped streets
Streets stretch along the water rather than forming a square grid. The result is a long, slightly curved city shape defined by the space available.
Forested hills
On either side, wooded slopes rise steeply. On the map they appear as open, quiet areas that make the dense centre stand out.
