Fortress outline
The traces of Steenwijk's bastions and ramparts still shape the edge of the old town, creating an angular, star-like outline at the heart of the map.

Mapa
Steenwijk Map Poster & Print
Steenwijk lies in the north of Overijssel, close to the borders with Friesland and Drenthe. On a map its historic centre is unmistakable: a compact old town enclosed by the traces of former fortifications, with ramparts and bastions whose angular shapes remain visible in the line of parks, water and streets around the core. Newer neighbourhoods spread out beyond that ring.
Steenwijk is one of the Netherlands' fortified towns, and parts of its old earthen walls survive as green ramparts that can be walked today. The town is also a gateway to Weerribben-Wieden National Park and to Giethoorn, the village known for its canals, both of which lie a short distance away in a landscape of lakes, reeds and polders.
A Steenwijk map poster rewards a close look. The star-like outline of the old defences frames a dense web of historic streets, while the railway and surrounding roads extend outward across flat, watery country. In black and white the geometry of the fortifications becomes the focal point, a shape that immediately identifies the town to anyone who knows it.

Historic centre
Inside the former defences, narrow streets and small blocks form a dense, irregular pattern that contrasts with the more open layout of later neighbourhoods.
Water and polders
Toward Giethoorn and Weerribben-Wieden, the landscape turns to lakes, canals and reed land, so a wider frame brings in a strikingly watery pattern.
