Temecula sits in southwestern Riverside County, where Murrieta Creek and Temecula Creek meet to form the Santa Margarita River. On a map the confluence reads as a pale ribbon of floodplain along the western edge of town, with Interstate 15 tracing a firm diagonal beside it. Old Town Temecula clusters on the creek side of the freeway, a short grid of blocks that predates everything around it.
East of the interstate the pattern changes. Curving subdivision streets fill the valley floor, looping around cul-de-sacs and small parks, before thinning out into the long straight lines of Rancho California Road and the wine country beyond. There the map turns sparse: vineyard parcels, winding drives and scattered estates, a quiet counterweight to the dense residential pattern closer to the freeway.
The city was incorporated in 1989, but the name and the stagecoach-era Old Town reach back much further. Today it is best known for its wineries and for the hot-air balloons that rise over the vineyards on clear mornings.
