Adıyaman lies on a gently sloping plateau in southeastern Anatolia, a short distance north of the Euphrates. Its centre is built around a mound that once held a castle, and the main avenues run out from it across the plain in fairly straight lines. Beyond them, orchards and fields fill the ground until the land drops toward the great reservoir created by the Atatürk Dam.
The province is best known for Mount Nemrut, where colossal stone heads from the first-century BC kingdom of Commagene stand on the summit, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city itself was long known as Hısn-ı Mansur. Large parts of it have been rebuilt since the 2023 earthquakes, so newer blocks now stand alongside older streets.
