Akalkot lies in Solapur district, near the Maharashtra–Karnataka border, on the open black-soil plains of the Deccan. The town was once the seat of a princely state, and its palace remains a reference point in the old centre. From above, the older quarters form a dense cluster of narrow streets, surrounded by newer, looser development.
Akalkot is best known as the town of Shri Swami Samarth, whose temple and associated sites draw pilgrims from across Maharashtra and beyond. The routes leading toward these places shape much of the town's movement, with roads converging on the centre from Solapur and the surrounding villages.
