Al Qaţīf lies on the Arabian Gulf coast in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, just north of Dammam. It is one of the oldest settled places in the region. For centuries it was a fertile oasis, fed by springs and covered in date palms, trading across the Gulf. The palm groves are still a distinctive feature, though urban growth has reduced them.
