Ariel is an Israeli settlement city in the central West Bank, and its international status is disputed. Its shape on the map comes directly from the terrain: the town stretches for several kilometres along a narrow ridge, running roughly east to west, so the built-up area is long and thin rather than round. Main roads follow the crest while smaller streets curve down the slopes.
Because the ground falls away on both sides of the ridge, many residential streets bend with the contours, creating layered, curving lines on the map. Ariel is home to Ariel University, whose campus forms a distinct cluster of buildings within the town.
