Ascoli Piceno sits in the southern Marche, on a spur of land where the Castellano stream flows into the Tronto River. On a map the two watercourses almost encircle the historic centre, and the old town fills the space between them. Inside, the streets keep the traces of a Roman grid, bent and narrowed by the building that came after.
The centre is built largely from pale travertine and is often called the city of a hundred towers, after the medieval tower houses that once rose over it.
