Āsela is the capital of the Arsi Zone in Ethiopia's Oromia region, set high on a plateau southeast of Addis Ababa. The land around it rises and falls in broad folds, with farmland stretching toward the slopes of Mount Chilalo. On a map, the town has a central grid around its main roads. Neighbourhoods on the edges spread out more loosely and follow the shape of the terrain.
The Arsi highlands are among Ethiopia's most important wheat-growing areas, and the cool climate at this altitude shapes daily life. They are also known far beyond Ethiopia as a cradle of distance runners. Haile Gebrselassie was born in the Asela area, and several other champions come from the surrounding zone.
