Ashiya occupies a thin band of land between Kobe and Nishinomiya, running from the slopes of the Rokko mountains down to Osaka Bay. The Ashiya River cuts through the city from north to south, and three railway lines, JR, Hankyu and Hanshin, cross it from east to west at different heights on the slope. The city is known as one of the most affluent residential areas in Japan, with quiet streets of large houses on the hillside, particularly in the Rokurokuso area.
