Aveiro sits on the edge of the Ria de Aveiro, a shallow lagoon separated from the Atlantic by a long, narrow sand spit. On a map the water is everywhere. Channels, basins and salt pans spread west of the city, and the Canal Central runs straight through the centre. This mix of land and water makes Aveiro instantly recognisable from above.
The canals, crossed by low bridges and used by the brightly painted moliceiro boats, have earned the city comparisons with Venice. West of the centre, the traditional salt pans form a grid of small rectangular pools. They are one of the most unusual and graphic textures on any Portuguese map.
