Bakau occupies the stretch of Gambian coast where the mouth of the River Gambia opens into the Atlantic. From above, the town is framed by water on more than one side, with the ocean along its shore and the wide estuary turning toward Banjul. Cape Point, the headland at its tip, gives the map a clean, angular corner that anchors the whole composition.
Inland from the shore the street pattern is tight and irregular, a mesh of lanes and compounds that thickens toward the main roads linking Bakau with Serekunda and the capital.
