Banderilla lies a short distance north of Xalapa, where the land starts to rise from the coastal side of Veracruz toward the high plateau. The map shows a town shaped by its terrain. Streets follow the contours, bend around ravines and sometimes stop at a steep slope, and the main road through town climbs toward Perote and the highlands.
The area is known for a cool, humid climate, frequent mist and dense greenery, and this shows even in a plain line drawing. Built-up blocks sit between patches of farmland and woodland, and the edges of the town merge with the northern neighbourhoods of the Xalapa area.
