Baoluan lies in the hilly terrain of Chongqing municipality, a region of steep slopes, terraced fields and narrow valleys east of the city of Chongqing itself. In landscapes like this, towns rarely form grids. Streets follow contours, bend around hillsides and gather where the ground levels out a little.
Chongqing is known for mountains and rivers, with the Yangtze and its tributaries cutting deep valleys across the region. Smaller towns such as Baoluan are part of that pattern. They are linked by winding roads and surrounded by farmland worked into the slopes.
