Bartoszyce is in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship of northeastern Poland, a short distance from the border with Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast. The town grew up on the Łyna, a river that winds north through the region, and the flat farmland around it is crossed by tree-lined roads, small woods and drainage ditches.
The historic centre was founded under the Teutonic Order, and its regular medieval plan still shows on a map: a compact block of streets around a market square, bounded on one side by the river. Later neighbourhoods and housing estates extend beyond it, while the Łyna's curves and its green banks cut a soft line through the town.
The surviving Lidzbark Gate, a Gothic brick town gate, is the best-known relic of the old walls.
