Bayjī lies on the west bank of the Tigris in Salah ad Din province, between Tikrit and Mosul. The river runs past the town in a broad, gentle curve, bordered by a narrow strip of irrigated land, while dry desert plains stretch out beyond.
The town is best known for its oil refinery, one of the largest in Iraq, which occupies a vast industrial site to the north. From above, the refinery appears as a large, geometric complex of tanks, pipelines and roads, contrasting sharply with the smaller, more irregular streets of the town itself.
