Berezhany is in Ternopil Oblast, in the rolling country of western Ukraine. From above, the town's structure is shaped by water and history. The Zolota Lypa river has been dammed into a long pond on one side of the centre, and the streets of the old town climb the higher ground around a central square.
The town grew up around a castle built by the Sieniawski family in the sixteenth century, one of the notable fortifications of the region. Its remains stand on low ground by the water and appear on the map as a distinct, angular footprint. Churches and older buildings mark the historic centre, while later neighbourhoods spread across the surrounding slopes.
