Bermejo lies at the far southern tip of Bolivia, in the Tarija Department, on the bank of the river that gives it its name. The Bermejo River marks the border with Argentina here, and the Argentine town of Aguas Blancas sits directly opposite, so the map of Bermejo is really a map of two countries divided by a single stretch of water.
At a much lower altitude than most of Bolivia, the area is warm and subtropical, and sugar cane is its defining crop. The town is closely associated with its sugar mill, and cane fields spread across the flat land around it. Cross-border trade is the other constant of daily life in this frontier town.
