Breaza lies in the Subcarpathian hills of Prahova County, on high ground above the valley that carries the main road and railway between Bucharest and Brașov. Rather than gathering around a single square, the town is scattered over several hills and terraces. On a map this gives it an irregular, branching outline, with neighbourhoods separated by slopes and small ravines.
For more than a century Breaza has been known as a climatic resort, valued for its clean air and mild summers, and many of its streets lead to villas and houses set among gardens. The road network reflects the terrain. Long curving streets follow the contour lines, while steeper connectors cut between them in short zigzags.
Down in the valley, the straighter lines of the national road, the railway and the Prahova River run in a firm band, which contrasts clearly with the looser pattern on the hills above.
