Changtan lies in the northeastern part of Chongqing municipality, in the hilly and mountainous country of the Three Gorges region. The terrain is steep and folded, and this shapes everything on the map. The town occupies a patch of lower ground, and its streets follow the valley instead of spreading out evenly.
Like many small towns in this part of China, Changtan has a main street that serves as its spine, with lanes and newer buildings along it. Roads leave the town by winding along the contours of the hillsides. Streams and small watercourses run through the surrounding valleys and add fine lines to the edges of the map.
