Changzhou lies on the flat, water-rich plain of southern Jiangsu, between Nanjing and Shanghai, and water shapes almost every part of its map. The Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal passes through the city. A network of smaller channels, rivers and old moats breaks the urban area into pieces, so bridges and waterfronts appear in nearly every neighbourhood.
The historic centre lies along the older course of the canal, where streets are narrower and the water runs close to houses and lanes. Nearby, Tianning Temple is known for its pagoda, completed in 2007 and one of the tallest in the world. Further out, straighter avenues lead to development zones, high-speed rail lines and newer residential districts.
The municipality extends south to the shore of Lake Tai and includes the smaller Ge Lake, while its northern districts reach the Yangtze. Between them lie flat farmland, fish ponds and villages linked by more canals.
