Chelles lies in Seine-et-Marne, east of Paris, on the northern bank of the Marne. The river curves along the southern edge of the town, and to the north the land rises to the wooded Montagne de Chelles. Between them, the street network fills the slope and plain. It is dense near the centre and becomes a pattern of residential streets and houses farther out.
The town's history goes back to the Merovingian period. Queen Balthild founded or refounded an abbey here in the seventh century, and it became an important religious centre. Today Chelles is a commuter town with a busy railway station on the line into Paris, and the tracks cut across the map as a strong, straight line.
