Cholargós lies in the north-eastern part of the Athens basin, between the city centre and the foot of Mount Hymettus. On a map it is part of the continuous urban fabric of Athens, yet it has its own pattern: a fairly regular grid of residential streets, small squares and pockets of green, bounded by major roads and rising gently towards the mountain.
The name goes back to antiquity. Cholargos was one of the demes of ancient Attica, and Pericles, the Athenian statesman, belonged to it. The modern suburb developed mostly in the twentieth century, and today it is a quiet residential area, with Mesogeion Avenue, one of the main arteries leading out of Athens, running along its edge.
