Chon Daen is a district town in the western part of Phetchabun province, where the land opens out toward the flatter country of Thailand's central plain. From above, the town reads as a small, fairly dense core of streets. Around it, a much wider pattern of field boundaries, farm tracks and scattered settlements takes over within a short distance of the centre.
The town grew up as a local centre for the surrounding countryside, and its layout on the map reflects that. A few through roads carry most of the traffic and meet near the middle of town, where buildings sit closest together.
