Coimbatore sits in western Tamil Nadu at the foot of the Western Ghats, close to the Palakkad Gap, the low pass that connects the region with Kerala. Its textile mills earned it the nickname Manchester of South India, and the city still carries a strong industrial and engineering identity. The Noyyal River crosses the southern part of the city, and a chain of historic tanks, reservoirs built to capture its water, forms a string of lakes including Ukkadam and Singanallur.
