Cornell University Map Poster & Print
Cornell sits on East Hill above the city of Ithaca, and the map makes its geography unusually clear. Two gorges, Fall Creek to the north and Cascadilla to the south, frame the central campus. The land drops steeply westward toward downtown and the southern tip of Cayuga Lake, one of the long, narrow Finger Lakes of upstate New York.
Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White founded the university in 1865 as a place where any person could find instruction in any study. Its core is the Arts Quad, a broad open rectangle. The grassy Libe Slope descends from the library and McGraw Tower toward West Campus, and farms, research fields and botanic gardens spread out to the east.
A Cornell University map poster holds the hill, the gorges and the lake edge in a single frame. The bridges that carry roads and footpaths across the ravines appear as short, decisive lines. The contrast between the dense campus buildings and the open fields to the east gives the print a strong, legible structure.
