Custoias lies in the northern interior of Portugal, in the upland country of the Guarda district and the wider Douro region. This is a landscape of hills, valleys and scattered villages, and from above the settlement shows an irregular core of narrow streets and tightly grouped houses, with roads leaving along the contours toward neighbouring communities.
Around it, the land is shaped by long farming on sloping ground. Terraces, walled fields, olive groves and vineyards are typical of the area, and on the map they appear as a fine texture of boundaries and tracks.
