Dax sits on the Adour in the Landes département of south-west France, where the river curves through a flat landscape of meadows and pine forest. The historic centre lies on the south bank, a compact knot of streets that later neighbourhoods have grown around. Bridges tie it to the suburb on the opposite bank.
The town is known above all for its thermal waters. The Fontaine Chaude, a steaming hot spring basin in the centre, has drawn visitors since Roman times, and Dax remains one of France's leading spa towns. Stretches of its old defensive walls survive, and a Dax map poster traces the tighter streets they once enclosed.
