Demnate sits where the plains east of Marrakech meet the first folds of the High Atlas. On a map, the old walled town forms a compact, irregular core of narrow lanes, while newer neighbourhoods spread outward on straighter streets. Beyond them, orchards and olive groves give way to rising ground, with roads and tracks bending into the valleys toward the mountains.
The town has long been a market centre for the surrounding Amazigh villages, and it once had a notable Jewish community with its own quarter. Nearby, the natural bridge of Imi n'Ifri spans a gorge, and fossilised dinosaur footprints have been found in the hills of the region, drawing visitors with an interest in geology.
