Denia lies on the Costa Blanca, roughly halfway between Valencia and Alicante. On a map the town gathers around its harbour and a castle hill in the centre, with the large bulk of the Montgó massif rising to the south. North of the port, long sandy beaches run past Les Marines. To the south, the rocky coves of Les Rotes lead towards the cape.
The castle overlooks the old quarter and the harbour, which has ferry services to the Balearic Islands. Denia is well known for its food, especially its red prawns, and in 2015 UNESCO named it a Creative City of Gastronomy. Fishing and the sea have long shaped the town's streets and daily life.
