Diffa is the capital of the region of the same name in the far southeast of Niger, close to the border with Nigeria and within the wider Lake Chad basin. From above, the town is a low, spread-out grid of sandy streets and walled compounds, with open Sahel country stretching away on every side.
The Komadugu Yobe river runs nearby along the border. In the wetter months its floodplain supports irrigated gardens, and the area is known for growing red peppers, an important crop for local farmers. The contrast between cultivated riverside land and dry plain is one of the defining features of the landscape.
