Dinnington lies in the Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, in the gently rolling country east of Sheffield. From above, the town is a compact arrangement of terraced streets near the centre, surrounded by later housing estates with curved roads and closes, and then open farmland in every direction, broken by lanes and small woods.
Like many places in this part of Yorkshire, Dinnington grew rapidly with coal mining in the early twentieth century, and the regular terraces built for mining families still shape the older part of the map. The colliery has closed, and the site and surrounding land have changed, but the street pattern still reflects that period of growth.
