Stepped quarries
The limestone and dolomite pits create broad terraced shapes beside the town. Their contour-like lines are unusual and strongly graphic on a black-and-white poster.

Dokuchayevsk Map Poster & Print
Dokuchayevsk is a town in Donetsk oblast in eastern Ukraine, in the open steppe south of the city of Donetsk. From above, its most striking feature is not a street or river but the quarries. Large pits dug for limestone and dolomite lie next to the town, their terraced edges visible as concentric lines on the map.
The town grew as a settlement for the quarry workers, and in 1954 it was given its current name in honour of the soil scientist Vasily Dokuchaev, the founder of modern soil science. Its streets form a fairly regular pattern of apartment blocks and private houses, with rail sidings and industrial ground connecting to the quarries.
Since 2014 the town has been in an area of conflict, a fact that gives any map of it a particular weight for those who come from it. A Dokuchayevsk map poster records the town as a physical place: steppe fields to the horizon, the stepped outlines of the pits, and the ordered blocks where people live and work.

Worker-town grid
Residential streets laid out for the quarry workforce form a regular, compact pattern. It contrasts clearly with the irregular industrial land next to it.
Steppe surroundings
Wide fields and shelter belts stretch outward from the town, straight-edged and open, giving the map a calm frame on every side.
