Dracena belongs to the Nova Alta Paulista, the chain of towns that grew up in the far west of São Paulo state during the twentieth century as farming pushed toward the Paraná River. Like many of its neighbours, it was laid out with purpose, and the plan still shows: rectangular blocks, straight streets and a centre that is easy to find from above.
Beyond the grid, the town gives way almost at once to open country. Fields, pasture and scattered farm roads surround the urban core, so the built area sits on the map like a neat block of text on a wide page. Dracena is also home to a campus of the state university UNESP, with a focus on agricultural and animal sciences.
