El Hermel sits at the northern end of Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, near the springs of the Orontes, known locally as the Assi. The river runs through a deep green valley close to the town, in sharp contrast with the dry, open land around it. Two monuments give El Hermel wider fame. The Qamouaa el Hermel, an ancient stone tower, stands alone on a hilltop south of the town.
