Eslamshahr lies on the plain south-west of Tehran, within Tehran province. On a map it forms a dense, largely flat urban area with long main streets running across it and a fine texture of narrow residential lanes between them. Highways link the city to the capital, and farmland and open ground appear at its southern and western edges.
The city grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century, as people moved toward the Tehran region in search of work and more affordable housing. That growth happened quickly and often informally, which shows in the tight, closely packed blocks that make up much of the city.
