Euskirchen lies south-west of Cologne, where the flat Rhineland plain begins to lift toward the Eifel hills. The small Erft river and its tributary streams pass the town. On a map, the old centre shows up as a tight knot of irregular streets. Wider roads and newer residential districts spread around it, filling the open farmland in every direction.
The town is the seat of its district and a local rail hub. Several lines meet here, and their tracks cut long, clean arcs across the street pattern.
