Évry was one of the villes nouvelles created around Paris from the 1960s onward, built on a site along the left bank of the Seine in the Essonne department, of which it is the préfecture. Since 2019 it has been part of the merged commune of Évry-Courcouronnes. The map shows a place designed rather than accumulated.
The centre is a cluster of large blocks, with the Agora complex, administrative buildings, the university and the railway station close together. Nearby stands Évry Cathedral, designed by Mario Botta and consecrated in 1995, one of the few cathedrals built in France in the twentieth century. Residential districts spread out in distinct neighbourhoods linked by curving roads.
An Évry map poster shows that modern planning clearly, from the dense centre to the river on the east. In black and white, the big geometric blocks and the soft line of the Seine make an unusual and striking composition.
