Florence sits on the north bank of the Tennessee River in northwest Alabama, part of the area known as the Shoals. The downtown follows a regular grid on high ground above the river, and the University of North Alabama campus lies just beyond it. To the south, bridges cross the wide river toward Sheffield and Muscle Shoals.
Upstream, Wilson Dam holds back the river and forms a broad lake. On the map, it creates a striking change in the width of the water. Florence is the birthplace of W. C. Handy, often called the father of the blues. The town also has the Rosenbaum House, a rare Frank Lloyd Wright home in Alabama that is open to visitors.
