Frederico Westphalen lies in the far north of Rio Grande do Sul, near the border with Santa Catarina, in the rolling country above the Uruguay River valley. The centre occupies higher ground, and from there the streets run down the slopes in several directions. The result is a plan that is partly regular and partly shaped by the hills, which gives it an attractive, uneven outline.
The town is best known as a university centre for its region.
