Fremont lies on the north bank of the Platte River in eastern Nebraska, where the river spreads into wide, braided channels full of sandbars and wooded islands. The town itself follows a straight prairie grid of numbered and named streets. The regular blocks meet the river's loose, shifting shapes along the southern edge, and the Elkhorn River winds past to the east.
Founded in 1856 and named after the explorer John C. Frémont, the town grew along the Union Pacific line, part of the first transcontinental railroad. It also sits on the historic Lincoln Highway.
