Nursery plots
Long, parallel plots once used for growing trees and shrubs run between the housing areas. They give the map a striped, cultivated pattern that is rare in suburban towns.

Halstenbek Map Poster & Print
Halstenbek lies just beyond Hamburg's north-western city limit, in the Pinneberg district of Schleswig-Holstein. On the map it has none of the hard edges of a city. Low-rise residential streets, curving cul-de-sacs and scattered green plots merge into neighbouring towns, and the rail line to Hamburg runs through the middle.
The area is known as nursery country. For generations, tree and plant nurseries have filled the land around Halstenbek and Pinneberg, and from above this appears as a patchwork of long, narrow plots between the houses. These rectangles give the map an unusual texture, part suburb and part cultivated field.
The S-Bahn line gives the town a clear spine, with stations that draw small clusters of shops and denser housing. A Halstenbek map poster shows how that railway, the looping residential roads and the nursery strips fit together into one quietly detailed composition.

S-Bahn spine
The commuter rail line to Hamburg cuts through the town in one steady line. Station areas form the small, dense centres along it.
Winding side streets
Away from the main roads, residential streets curve and dead-end in quiet loops. On paper they create a fine, organic lacework of lines.
