Shifting grids
Residential blocks follow several different grid orientations and meet at angles, which gives the map a patchwork quality typical of older suburbs.

Hillside Map Poster & Print
Hillside is a township in Union County, New Jersey, in the heavily built-up area a few miles west of Newark Liberty International Airport. It shares borders with Newark, Elizabeth, Union and Irvington, so on a map there is no gap between it and its neighbours. Streets continue straight across municipal lines, and the township is defined by its boundaries, not by open land.
The layout is largely residential, with blocks of single-family homes on a grid that changes angle from one neighbourhood to the next. Major roads and rail lines pass through or along the township, and patches of industrial land and parks break up the housing. The Elizabeth River runs nearby, one of the few natural lines in a thoroughly urban landscape.
A Hillside map poster shows how intricately built this part of northern New Jersey is. The fine texture of residential streets, the heavier lines of highways and railways, and the neighbouring cities pressing on every edge make a composition that is dense yet orderly. It is especially striking in the high contrast of the Noir style.

Transport corridors
Highways and rail lines cross or skirt the township. Their broad strokes cut through the finer residential fabric and link it to Newark and beyond.
Continuous edges
Hillside’s streets run directly into those of Newark, Elizabeth and Union, so the poster shows a slice of a much larger metropolitan fabric.
